I thought that was an inbrowser thing too. O-o Nope, there's no sub, no up-front cost. Depending on your preferences and/or commitment to the game, you can purchase 'modules' beyond the core story set to play through, along with other amenities, but the core game is completely free, and you can earn the in-game currency (Turbine Points) as you earn reputation with the various factions which can be used to purchase said modules or other extras.
